Today Vincent van Gogh is one of the most famous and popular artists of all time. Aside from infamously cutting-off his ear, Van Gogh’s art has come to define post-impressionism.
Van Gogh did not begin painting until later in life and only lived to the age of 37. Despite only painting for about 10 years, he created more than 2000 artworks.
However, during his relatively short life, Van Gogh actually struggled in obscurity and financial hardship, selling only one painting in his lifetime. He largely considered himself a failure.
Van Gogh suffered from mental health problems. He struggled to control his emotions and sometimes he felt very sad or angry. He used painting to help with his illness as it enabled him to express his emotions.
Van Gogh tried many other careers before declaring himself an artist, he was deeply religious and dreamed of becoming a pastor.
Van Gogh created his most famous work ‘The Starry Night’ while staying in an asylum. Another his work is iconic ‘Sunflowers’, where his use of vibrant colours and subjective perspective gave vitality and helped to revolutionise how the world views art.
We can’t wait to see you there!
